Four Tet @ The Village Underground

May bank holiday weekend saw Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet bring his own brand of cross-genre electronica to one of Shoreditch’s most diverse and exciting venues. With a pulsating live late night set, Four Tet fans had a while to wait before he graced his purpose built dj stage, an elevated platform in the heart of the crowd. If anyone was worried about getting in the mood for the main act, they needn’t have bothered, as Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) and Roska provided the Sunday night crowd with plenty to get their teeth into.

As befits his own unique style of producing, Four Tet has an acute understanding of a huge range of musical styles, and it is his ability to mix these different flavours that has seen him grow into the critically acclaimed artist, now with five albums under his belt. His latest album There is Love in You, released in January this year on Domino Records, has been hailed as his finest and most complete record yet. Initial reservations that tracks from Four Tet’s earlier, mellower albums might lead to a disjointed dj set were quickly dispelled from the outset. His ability to satisfy a packed nightclub is testament to his skills honed over a sustained residency period at the London nightclub Plastic People, and this gig was no exception. With the crowd hanging onto every note and sound, Hebden seamlessly weaved distorted soul loops, minimal tech house and dubstep into guitar loops and syncopated jazz beats. Not satisfied with dwelling on one sound for too long, he is a master at mixing styles in a beautifully subtle and fluid way.

Four Tet is a voracious remixer, collaborator and producer. Last year saw Hebden team up with Burial to release a two-track 12”, and it’s collaborations like this that clearly influence Four Tet’s evolving sound. Hebden’s last single 'Sing' combines his experience of remixing Aphex Twin tracks with Burial’s minimalism to sublime effect. Just as this tune came to a head, hundreds of multicoloured balloons were dropped from a giant net suspended below the Victorian warehouse ceiling. The baying crowd - that had spent the whole night attempting to work out when this sea of colour would descend - became ecstatic. In a split second, the dark throbbing intensity in the room was transformed into a scene reminiscent of an outdoor party at sunset.

Hebden has clearly been honing his live set while touring There is Love in You and if the gig at the Village Underground is anything to go by, Four Tet is going to go down a storm over the Summer festival season. Alongside Glastonbury, Bestival, Reading and Leeds festivals, Four Tet will be delivering his powerful sets throughout Europe, in an extensive run. It is testament to how far Four Tet’s sound has evolved and how confident he has become that he will also be playing We Love Space in Ibiza in early August.

If you’re not satisfied to wait that long, then you can hear Four Tet link up with his good friend James Holden as they play the Village Underground again this weekend for the DJ:Kicks Party. Judging by his solo bank holiday gig, this will surely not disappoint.
