2010 will see another milestone in the already illustrious career of Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren when he releases his new artist album, ‘Mirage’, in September. As with previous releases, the album paves the way for a new Armin Only world tour. After successful outings in 2008 of Armin Only: ‘Imagine’ in countries like Holland, the United States, Australia, Belgium, Poland and Romania, expectations run high. Will ‘Mirage’ eclipse ‘Imagine’?

Armin Only 2008 - ‘Imagine’
It’s been a while since ‘Imagine’ conquered both hearts and minds of Armin’s true fans all over the world. On a large stage in the middle of the crowd Armin played a nine-hour DJ set, accompanied by guest singers and artist friends such as Chris Jones, Jennifer Rene, Cathy Burton and Rank 1. The gigs in every city the ‘Imagine’ tour visited were fantastically successful. The events sold out way in advance and excited visitors experienced a joyful night on the dancefloor.

Memorable moments include when thousands of lit-up cellphones were lifted in the air, and numerous shots were taken with those same mobiles when an angel appeared high above the DJ booth during ‘Burned With Desire’. After the last record, satisfied crowds went home with just one question on their minds: ‘Is it possible to top this night?’

On the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of July, the Polish city of Kołobrzeg will play host to this year’s Sunrise Festival. For three days and three nights the world’s spinning elite will descend on the seaside resort on the country’s north coast for what is now, without question, the pinnacle of the Polish electronic dance music calendar.

Very much at the centre of that action will be Cliff Coenraad – one of The Netherlands brightest nu-breed dance stars and a man who will be delivering a big 1-2-3 in support of the festival!

‘Massive’ - The Official Sunrise Theme: Back in April Cliff was offered the opportunity of producing the track that would come to encapsulate and enrapture Sunrise 2010. “When I got the call asking me to do this I felt both honoured and excited at the same time”, says Cliff - “I couldn’t wait to begin”. Grasping the task with both hands, he set about creating a track that had every element necessary to rank as a festival anthem. The result is both titularly and literally ‘Massive’.  Released on the 5th of July through High Contrast, its pistoning beats, speaker-quaking bass and huge stabbed super-synths and are primed and ready to push Sunrise into supernova.

fab

Ricardo Villalobos will headline the next edition of Fabric's monthly all-night party series 'On,' is set to take place on August 21.

A month after debuting a 30-hour party of nonstop music entitled 'On & On...& On' back in May, the popular London club hit a well-documented period of uncertainty stemming from the closing of its sister club Matter. Shorter both in name and duration, 'On' returned to the monthly fabric lineup in July with a 15-hour program that featured a cross section of musical talent such as Tiefschwarz, The Revenge, Holy Ghost!, Tama Sumo and Paco Osuna.

This month's session will be evenly split between between influential UK DJs and some of fabric's Berlin-based regulars. Villalobos graced all three rooms of the club during it's mammoth tenth birthday celebration last year, but this time he'll be happily ensconced in his favoured spot in the Room One booth. Joining him will be fellow Chilean artist Dinky and The Modern Deep Left Quartet, a Canadian contingency made up of Cobblestone Jazz members Mathew Jonson, Danuel Tate and Tyger Dhula, and Colin 'The Mole' De La Plante.

Skanyes

Meganite. The name suggests it all really. Tonight is showcasing the best in Techno with Christian Smith, Mauro Picotto and Adam Beyer. On top of this we also have the pleasure of listening to the lads from the successful night, Colour.

To kick things off Christian Smith plays the hottest, funkiest tech house and house. An extremely groovy mix caught my ears and the songs – though completely unknown - made me shake my fist in some form of bizarre and unnatural way.

We then proceeded upstairs to Spektrum, to check out a couple of the Colour guys’ set. Phil Denton was extremely notable, playing extremely heavy techno reminiscent of early Liebing, Beyer and Speedy Jay. Absolutely pounding mixing was the name of the game up here.

Mauro Picotto, ultimately known for Lizard (in the same way Zombie Nation is known for ‘that song’), played a set I was not expecting. Once a pioneer of the Trance-Tech crossover that hit the late 90’s, tonight he played an incredible set of groovy tech house. From what I remember he didn’t play Lizard, I may be wrong though. Even though Meganite is Picotto’s idea, I didn’t find him as entertaining as some of the other DJs to have graced Sankeys in the last few months. However, the hundreds of other people dancing and throwing their arms wildly in the air may have something different to say.

Four Tet @ The Village Underground

May bank holiday weekend saw Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet bring his own brand of cross-genre electronica to one of Shoreditch’s most diverse and exciting venues. With a pulsating live late night set, Four Tet fans had a while to wait before he graced his purpose built dj stage, an elevated platform in the heart of the crowd. If anyone was worried about getting in the mood for the main act, they needn’t have bothered, as Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) and Roska provided the Sunday night crowd with plenty to get their teeth into.
